Real-Life Superhero Finalist for School Counselor of the Year
David Forrester, a school counselor from Olympia High School in Olympia, Wash., has been compared to Spider Man for his vast skill set as a counselor. Students and teachers call Forrester “Spider Man” for his ability to collaborate and establish a web of student support services. One of Forrester’s achievements is developing a multi-year mission and action plan for his school’s career center. After incorporating input from the district’s career and technical education director as well as OHS’s career center director and principal, Forrester obtained a grant and resources to develop websites and tools to strengthen the center's mission. Dr. Carolyn Stone: Counselor Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
Stone says that in the last 10 years, the biggest transition in the school counseling profession has been the move to connect school counseling more closely to the school mission. A school mission statement often defines what a school offers and the way they provide it lines up with state and national educational goals. "Education and schools are the great equalizers. This one institution promises to give every American an equal opportunity to better their lives. Education can aid in breaking the cycle of poverty. The trick is to connect what we do as school counselors to the school academic success picture and to demonstrate in our actions that we believe all children can achieve. The last decade has proven a stronger tie to school counselor accountability." Read More |
