I call it the “Follow through” year. Mainly because most students fall off the last year of school, I’ve seen it happen to too many peers. These are some steps I’m taking to ensure that I actually have a college career:

1. I made a conscientious decision to not play basketball this year.
This was probably one of the hardest steps to this college process I had to take. High school basketball practice was long and rigorous every day and I soon began to push homework and studying to the back seat. That is one thing I had to change coming into the new year.

2. Since I eliminated basketball out of the picture, I had to amp up my course difficulty. I signed up for all AP classes, with intention of getting A’s in every one. To be honest I was always highly intimidated by the work that came with these AP classes especially since it was already in a magnet program.

3. I have to retake my SATs, do way more community service, and join at least three more clubs. I took my SAT earlier this year and was a bit disappointed, I didn’t study much thinking I was the golden boy and fell short of my expectations. I’m also skyping admissions counselors at colleges like Wake Forest, yes I was surprised too counselors are getting cooler. Lastly, August is my month to really dig in and start applying for my reach, dream, and fallback schools, its time to smell the coffee and realize nobody is going to do this for me I have to do it for myself.

Some say junior year is the most important year of high school, I say senior year is the most important.
