Got your head in the clouds?

Cloud AtlasBefore finals come to take over your life, I strongly urge you all to watch Cloud Atlas starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, and James D’arcy (whew, quite an extensive cast)!

The cinematography is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Coupled with superb acting and CGI, this film will take you to a whole other world–or 6 to be exact!

Yes, Cloud Atlas spans over the course of 500 years. You’ve got your past, present, future and waaaay into the future! Each make up for an intriguing story, and they are all connected. Pay close attention to detail (you might want to watch it twice) for you’ll notice there’s a strong motif of deja vu. I won’t spoil the whole movie for anyone, but this’ll definitely help you practice your organizational and critical thinking skills.

Aside from all the thinking, this movie is also great for reclining against your seat and enjoying the special effects. I was literally blown away by the CGI (they use the actors more than once; it reinforces the concept of a past life) that altered the actors’ appearance in the film. The amount of creativity is phenomenal. Thematic, thoughtful, and versatile, I couldn’t recommend a finer film. I particularly enjoyed the concept of Neo Seoul in Sonmi~451’s segment. My favorite story, though, would have to be of Luisa Rey’s. Not only is Halle Berry stunning as usual, but it’s got that classic mystery element about it.
However, be prepared for violence, sexuality (and nudity), and some heart wrenching scenes. There are major plot twists!
Honestly, go watch Cloud Atlas! I highly recommend it to anyone that just wants to take a break. Or if you’re an AP Lit-er like me… analyze a fantastic movie. Either way, you won’t go wrong!

Cheers!
Nikki
