Nikki’s De-stressor Techniques!
Does anyone else feel the stress coming on? I know the feeling all too well. Sometimes you wish your parents would just lend you a hand; who wants to do all this by yourself? I don’t know about you, but my mom seems to think sitting around furiously typing on my computer or reading is for “nothing.” I wish she knew exactly what I’m going through right now. And with all these deadlines for different subjects and events, who has the time? But then you remember what all this stress is for: College.
I’ve decided to help out anyone else pulling out their hair with some of my De-Stressor Techniques!
A friend of mine, whose name will be withheld for her own privacy, told me that when she stresses out she meditates. I know that sounds kind of wacky but it works! Lucky for me, I have a yoga mat in my room 🙂 Meditating can take all kinds of forms, but what I do is get on my back, close my eyes, and try to relax. If anything negative thoughts come up, I dispel them. Focus on just breathing, or listening to the sounds around you. If you don’t live in a hustlin’ and bustlin’ city, crack a window open! At first I was all like “Say what? You want me to take time out of my busy schedule to just lie down and close my eyes? Get real!” But it actually works! Because if you’re stressed out and trying to finish a book, or solve some math problems, you’ll be a lot slower when it comes to reaching your goal. Your thought processing will be impeded by you subconsciously trying to put away negative thoughts. Take 5 to 10 minutes to relax. Or! If you need to get your body pumped and concentrated…
That’s right. Take a walk, a jog, a run. Do some jumping jacks for about a minute. Get on the floor and do sit-ups/crunches or push-ups. Bicycle kick your way into motivation and concentration!
Sometimes we all need a break from our hectic lives. I know I do. So if you’re feeling stressed out right now, and you’re thinking of all the things you need to get done NOW, just take a break. Relax, listen to a few songs, lie on the couch, the floor, your bed…and come back after a maximum of 15 minutes. You should feel recharged and ready to get back in the game.
And as an FYI, if you want to pig out as a way to relax–avoid carbs like the plague. Unless you plan on being in a comatose state, I don’t recommend it. Eat a couple fruit, vegetables, and maybe trail mix. I also don’t suggest you drink coffee; it has its after-effects.
That’s it for now, I’ll see you all very soon!
From your friendly neighborhood high schooler,
P.S.–I’ve always wanted to be a superhero. When I was little and I was all up in them X-men, Batman, Spiderman, etc. comics/tv shows/movies, I made comics of my own alter ego. Sounds lame, but she kicked butt. I wonder where she went…
