Davaney Overton\u2019s journey with art is one filled with experimentation, self-expression and an unshakable passion for creating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 19-year-old sophomore at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is this year\u2019s Creative Outlook Cover Contest winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overton\u2019s winning piece, Crafting Comfort, is part of a larger series that reflects her unique experience growing up as a military child. The painting is an ode to the creative mediums that have journeyed with her through frequent relocations, from paints to crochet and sewing supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watercolor has been a go-to medium throughout Overton\u2019s life. While she is inspired by many artists, she credits Carrie Waller, watercolorist and a friend, for impacting her watercolor journey the most.<\/p>\n\n\n

Overton\u2019s time at MICA has broadened her artistic horizons. She\u2019s discovered a passion for fiber arts and printmaking, adding new layers to her creative process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn art school, I\u2019ve tried to experiment with mediums I hadn\u2019t used before,\u201d she shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her approach to art is deeply rooted in self-expression, and she finds joy in experimenting with different techniques \u2013 whether it\u2019s mixing watercolor directly on paper or exploring the texture and intricacies of fiber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey to becoming an artist has been lifelong for Overton, whose earliest memories involve making art. By eighth grade, she began considering art as a career. This passion has grown even stronger in college, where she finds herself constantly creating, whether for assignments or personal fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For aspiring artists, Overton offers heartfelt advice: \u201cIt\u2019s OK if every piece does not come out the way you envision it, or if every idea you have is not the most amazing idea. Don\u2019t forget that art is supposed to be fun, and that these doubts are just roadblocks to your artistic practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she continues her studies at MICA, Overton is excited about exploring fashion shows, new classes and creative internships that will help launch her into the professional art world.
