What is Speech and Hearing?

Speech and hearing majors concentrate on speech pathology and audiology in order to assist people suffering from communication disorders that may interfere with a child's education, with an individual's ability to function in society, or with the overall quality of a person's life.. Students normally participate in clinical work related to their studies. Interested students in take courses in fundamental processes of normal speech, language, and hearing: anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism, linguistics, acoustics, speech perception, and speech and language development. Speech and hearing departments are almost always associated with clinics and patient services. Consequently, students may also be involved in research projects. as well as in the delivery of services. A minimum of a master's degree is required for American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) professional certification.
