What
is ROTC?
The Reserve Officer Training (ROTC) program is designed for students needing financial help when attending school and who are willing to make a commitment to military service after their graduation. Military Science is not a major or minor granting department, but military science courses do count for elective credit. Members of ROTC must engage in active military service one weekend a month and two full weeks a year while in school. They also commit themselves to at least two years with the military after graduation. The ROTC program is administered by career army officers.
The ROTC program offers a stipend for a student’s education. Students receive a level of scholarship that is determined by grades, commitment to the military and other factors. ROTC members sign a contractual obligation. ROTC offers a variety of scholarships to qualified students: 4-, 3- or 2-year. Scholarships are merit-based and include full tuition and fees, a book allowance and a monthly stipend of between $250 and $400 (freshmen and sophomores $250, juniors $350, seniors $400). ROTC may offer free room and board (one or two per year) and/or supplemental scholarships to highly qualified cadets.
The ROTC program is offered through all the major military branches: Army, Air Force, Marines, and the Navy. The program produces approximately 75% of all Army officers. Officers can stay with the military after two or more years of service or they can join the private sector.

List of Potential Jobs in ROTC
These professions and professional organizations
illustrate the types of positions you might qualify for
if you complete this major. Some majors are more directly
related to employment than others, however. You should
consider the likelihood of employment after graduation
carefully, if you do not plan to go on for graduate work
in a field. Even with the completion of graduate work
in some fields, however, employment is difficult, so you
should determine what the prospects are for this or any
major. Employment possibilities are often enhanced by
the selecting employment-related courses and by the enrollment
in second major or in a minor.
