Sport,
Kinesiology and Health Studies Major
What is Sport, Kinesiology
and Health Studies?
Kinesiology is the bio-scientific and socio-cultural study of human movement. Departments offering this major may offer several different types of programs that focus on core studies related to exercise, movement and fitness; social, cultural, and psychological aspects of physical activity; formal and informal sports programs; human growth, development; and development of the human body form throughout one’s life; therapies to deal with physical injury; and the teaching/coaching of physical activity and sport.
One direction these programs can move in is toward physical education and the teaching of health in the public schools. Students combine their sports and health studies with a degree in education to become certified teachers and coaches. Another direction for these programs takes students into exercise science and kinesiology. This program focus prepares students for employment in corporate fitness centers, health clubs, sports medicine clinics, and cardiac and physical rehabilitation programs. This type of program may lead to graduate studies in fields such as physical therapy, athletic training, occupational therapy, or medicine. A third direction for such programs is sport management, which prepares students to plan, organize and directing sport programs and facilities. Such programs prepare students for careers in sport/fitness club management, interscholastic and intercollegiate athletic management, recreation programming and administration, sport marketing, sport retailing, sport agency management, sport facilities management, sport media relations, and other sport or recreation associated careers.
