Journalism Major
What is Journalism?
Journalism is an important major because
it educates people who will be employed in newspapers,
radio and television stations, and in other media that
exercise the responsibility of informing the public about
current issues. Journalism prepares students for professional
careers in communications, news and editorial writing,
photojournalism, public relations and advertising. An
internship in a professional organization in which the
student?s skill can be employed is often available. Students
learn the discipline of newspaper reporting and editing,
listening, observing, double-checking, getting facts right,
shooting story-telling photos, designing attractive pages,
writing under deadline pressure and publishing a real
newspaper.

What Kinds of Students Major in
Journalism?
Journalism students must think critically,
research thoroughly, as well as write clearly and concisely.
They must enjoy a professionally oriented program that
places special emphasis on reporting, research, and writing
skills. Students in journalism need a broad understanding
of the world in order to present their findings to others
in a clear and concise manner. Consequently, they will
take a variety of courses outside of their major. It is
also possible for science students, political science
students and students with specific interests to specialize
in writing or speaking about these special fields.

What Types of Positions do Journalism
Majors Take After College?
These professions and professional organizations
illustrate the types of positions you might qualify for
if you complete this major. Some majors are more directly
related to employment than others, however. You should
consider the likelihood of employment after graduation
carefully, if you do not plan to go on for graduate work
in a field. Even with the completion of graduate work
in some fields, however, employment is difficult, so you
should determine what the prospects are for this or any
major. Employment possibilities are often enhanced by
the selecting employment-related courses and by the enrollment
in second major or in a minor.
