Jason Coles: Art Teacher of the Year NomineeNominee: Jason Coles
Name of High School/College: Snake River High School
Student Name: Julie Bell

Why do you believe that this nominee should be named
Creative Outlook Magazine’s Art Teacher of the Year”?

Jason Coles is an amazing artist, better yet he’s an amazing teacher. He’s not like most art teachers; he knows how to help beginner artists reach their full potential. He critiques everything, starting with the reference or idea, ending with the smallest details. He makes his students work hard and become independent, but he never fully leaves them.

He teaches five major classes: Fundamentals, Drawing I, Drawing II, Drawing III, and AP Art. In fundamentals he teaches proportions, shading, negative space, etc. In Drawing I he teaches how to draw the human face in detail (with pencil, pen, and charcoal). Drawing II he teaches how to draw the human body (with charcoal, color pencils, and oil pastels). Drawing III he teaches his kids to get creative, to be messy but not sloppy. He has his kids work on their own technique and mark making. He teaches how to use a variety of materials and tools to make art. Finally, in AP Art he pushes his kids the hardest. He spends hours working with his kids helping them become better. Mr. Coles spends so much time trying to help his students become the best artists, and adults, they can be. He spends hours, days, months working so that he can better his students as well as himself. He’s the best art teacher I’ve ever had and that’s because he won’t give up on any student, he won’t let them seek by, and he won’t let them give
up on their dreams.
